A Creative Wall in the Writer’s Room

According to recent interviews with Greno, who is currently promoting his new project Swapped, the creative team didn’t just ignore the idea. In fact, they held a massive off-site brainstorming session at Disney to see if they could crack the code for a second movie. They spent hours trying to find a narrative that felt earned, but they kept hitting the same wall: the story felt finished.

Greno explained that Tangled is a bit like Pinocchio or Beauty and the Beast. Once Pinocchio becomes a real boy or the Beast turns human, the central magical conflict is resolved. For Rapunzel, the story was deeply tied to her journey of self-discovery and, physically, her seventy feet of magical golden hair. Once that hair was cut and she was reunited with her parents, the filmmakers felt they’d be forcing a plot just for the sake of a franchise.
