Welcome to Monstropolis: Disney Reveals the Brilliant Story Behind Hollywood Studios’ New Monsters, Inc. Land

Disney’s Hollywood Studios is officially preparing for a massive invasion of humans, and we finally know the exact story behind why the doors to the monster world are opening! On June 4, 2026, Walt Disney World revealed the complete narrative framework for the upcoming Monsters, Inc. land, officially named Monstropolis.

This isn’t just a random collection of attractions. Imagineers are building a fully cohesive, story-driven environment that explains exactly why we, the guests, are allowed to walk among the monsters.

What is H.U.M.A.N. Day?

The land’s storyline picks up right after the events of the original 2001 Pixar film. As fans know, Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan discovered that human laughter is ten times more powerful than screams. This didn’t just solve the city’s energy crisis, it completely revolutionized the culture of Monstropolis. Fear and suspicion of humans quickly evolved into curiosity and connection.

To celebrate this monumental shift, the city is hosting its very first “H.U.M.A.N. Day.” Short for “Humans Understand Monsters Are Nice,” this citywide festival serves as a cultural exchange. Through the pages of the city’s official newspaper, the Monstropolis Horn, the citizens of Monstropolis are celebrating this historic decision to invite humans into their world for the first time.

The Department of Human Relations (The New HR)

To make sure this cross-world meeting goes smoothly, the city has established a brand-new government agency: the Department of Human Relations (yes, the other HR department). This team is responsible for helping monsters overcome their generational fears of humans and welcoming us as honored guests.

But don’t expect every monster to be perfectly comfortable. Some monster residents are still incredibly nervous about having humans walk their streets, and even the Child Detection Agency (CDA) remains on high alert. This tension will make for some incredible in-park interactions. Cast Members will even play a role as Human Relations representatives to guide us through our visit!

Harryhausen’s, the Glob Theater, and More

Along with the storyline, Disney officially confirmed several iconic landmarks that guests will be able to explore:

Our Take: Why This Backstory is a Win

Theme park lands always face the challenge of explaining “why are we here?” By establishing H.U.M.A.N. Day and the Department of Human Relations, Imagineers have created a fun, witty, and logical bridge. It gives a clear purpose to our visit and allows for the signature humor of the Pixar franchise to shine through every single detail.

While the loss of the classic Muppets Courtyard is bittersweet, keeping the Muppets alive with the recently opened Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Starring The Muppets helps soften the blow. Monstropolis looks to be a worthy and incredibly immersive successor.
