Universal Orlando Sparks Outrage: Major Nighttime and Express Pass Changes Hit Hagrid’s Motorbike Adventure

A Summer of Big Operational Shifts at Islands of Adventure

Universal Orlando Resort is making some massive operational moves this summer, and not everyone is thrilled about it. For months, guests have carefully planned their days around experiencing Islands of Adventure’s premier coaster, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. However, a combination of newly announced policy changes and unannounced queue restrictions has left many Harry Potter fans and park-goers incredibly frustrated.

Since opening in 2019, Hagrid’s has remained one of the most popular attractions in all of Florida. The highly themed roller coaster blends launches, animatronics, and the open-air beauty of the Forbidden Forest. But navigating its legendary wait times is about to get even trickier as Universal clamps down on how and when you can get in line.

The End of Universal Express on Hagrid’s

The first major blow came when Universal Orlando confirmed that, beginning July 1, 2026, Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure will be officially removed from the Universal Express program. This change rolls back an option that was originally introduced in May 2025.

According to Universal, removing the ride from Express Pass is an operational update designed to improve the overall flow of the guest experience. Because Hagrid’s has a highly complex loading process and massive demand, merging the Express and standby lines has caused standby wait times to balloon. Standby queues have regularly averaged well over two hours, which is nearly double the wait of other high-intensity coasters in the park like the Jurassic World VelociCoaster.

While standard standby guests might celebrate a steadier line, this decision is a massive disappointment for high-paying visitors. Guests staying at premier hotels like Loews Portofino Bay Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, and Loews Royal Pacific Resort rely on the included Unlimited Express Pass as a primary vacation perk. Premier Annual Passholders who get Express access after 4:00 PM also feel they are losing one of the most valuable benefits of their premium tiers without any drop in pricing.

Early Queue Closures Block Nighttime Riders

To make matters worse, guests are now reporting that Universal has quietly started restricting queue access at the end of the night. It has long been a favorite strategy for seasoned theme park fans to hop into the Hagrid’s queue during the final hour of park operations. Not only does this often yield slightly lower wait times, but riding the coaster in total darkness makes the forest scenery and the speed feel incredibly intense.

Lately, however, visitors are arriving at the entrance up to an hour before park closing only to find the queue blocked off by Team Members. If standby wait times are too high late in the evening, the park is cutting off access early to ensure the ride can close and clear all guests by a specific time. This means you can still be inside Islands of Adventure during official park hours and yet be completely locked out of its star attraction.

Our Take: How to Adjust Your Strategy

With both Express Pass gone and late-night access becoming unreliable, you need a new plan of attack for your next Universal vacation. If you are staying on-site, your best option is utilizing Early Park Admission. Getting to Hogsmeade first thing in the morning is now the most dependable way to secure a reasonable wait. If you cannot make it in the morning, we recommend monitoring the wait times closely in the afternoon. Do not risk waiting until the final hour of the night, or you might find yourself staring at a closed gate.
