The Battle for Private Island Supremacy Heats Up
For cruisers who love a private island day, the competition just got a lot more exciting. Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is officially moving closer to the grand debut of its massive expansion at Great Stirrup Cay. The centerpiece of this transformation is the Great Tides Water Park, a project designed to offer a balance of high-octane thrills and relaxed island vibes. Master-planned by the Orlando-based firm Martin Aquatic, this project aims to give guests “The Great Life” starting this summer.
Reaching New Heights with Tidal Tower
The most striking addition to the skyline will be the Tidal Tower. Standing at a staggering 170 feet tall, this structure is set to become a landmark in the Bahamas. To put that in perspective, reports indicate it will stand about five feet taller than the Daredevil’s Tower at Royal Caribbean’s neighboring Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Tidal Tower will house eight different waterslides, including the two tallest attractions in the entire park. Guests can expect a variety of experiences including mat racers, spiraling tube slides, and high-speed body slides. One of the best features for tired climbers is the inclusion of a conveyor system that will carry rafts and tubes to the top, saving your legs for the actual splashdown.
Beyond the Traditional Lazy River
If you’re expecting a slow drift around the park, think again. Instead of a standard lazy river, Great Tides Water Park features an 800-foot Dynamic River. This attraction uses a faster-moving current that takes guests roughly four to six minutes to complete a full circuit. It is designed with four entry points to keep guest flow moving smoothly.
The highlight of the river is a 110-foot immersive tunnel. This section features LED lighting and projections meant to mimic a glowing, bioluminescent underwater scene. If the speed gets to be too much, there is a swim-up bar and wading area located right along the route for a quick break.
Thrills at Cliffside Cove
For those looking for a bit more of an adrenaline rush, Cliffside Cove will be the place to be. This area features racer slides and cliff jumps at both 10-foot and 15-foot heights. Norwegian is also touting the Caribbean’s only wide family slide, which is specifically designed to accommodate up to four riders at once. If you prefer to stay dry while others take the plunge, you can grab a drink at The Grotto Bar, which is tucked away beneath the family slide and offers a great view of the action.
Fun for the Little Ones and Relaxation Seekers
Families with younger children have not been overlooked. A 9,000-square-foot splash zone serves as the park’s central hub for kids. This area is packed with tipping buckets, interactive water elements, and mini slides tailored for smaller cruisers.
While the water park is the big news for the summer, NCL has already rolled out several amenities that guests can enjoy right now. The Great Life Lagoon features a 1.4-acre heated pool area with private cabanas and two swim-up bars. The Reef Bar offers a high-energy atmosphere with a live DJ, while The Waves Bar provides a more laid-back beach-entry experience. For land-based fun, Horizon Park offers pickleball, mini-golf, and lawn games, while Hammock Bay provides over 50 hammocks for those who just want to nap in the breeze.
Planning Your Island Getaway
- Check the Pier: The new multi-ship pier is already operational, meaning you can walk right off the ship and onto the island without needing a tender boat.
- Transportation: Take advantage of the islandwide tram service to get between the welcome plaza and the new water park areas.
- Early Arrival: With nineteen slides and a faster dynamic river, these areas are likely to be popular. Heading to the Tidal Tower early in the day is a smart move.
Whether you are racing down a 170-foot tower or drifting through a bioluminescent tunnel, the new Great Stirrup Cay is shaping up to be a premier destination for Norwegian guests looking for both adventure and relaxation.
