The Spark of a New Imagination
If there’s one character that defines the heart and soul of EPCOT, it’s Figment. For years, fans have debated the state of the Journey into Imagination pavilion, with many longing for a return to the whimsical heights of the original 1983 attraction. Recently, the rumor mill has kicked into high gear following some very interesting physical changes inside the ride, leading many to believe that Figment might just be getting a massive upgrade.
According to reports and ongoing discussions within the Disney community, there’s significant talk about a potential “re-imagining” of the pavilion. The phrase floating around is that “Figment will be replaced by Figment”—meaning the current version of the ride could be overhauled to make way for a newer, more technically advanced experience that brings back the spirit of the classic purple dragon we all know and love.
Why the Rumors Are Picking Up Speed
While Disney hasn’t made an official announcement regarding a total track overhaul, several clues have surfaced that suggest things are moving behind the scenes. In late 2025, guests noticed that one of the main Figment animatronics on the ride was swapped out for a temporary figure. This replacement figure actually looks a lot like the original 1983 version of the character, sporting a slightly different look and a more vintage aesthetic.
Whenever a major animatronic goes “down” for a long period or is replaced by a temporary placeholder, it usually points to a significant refurbishment. For Figment fans, this is the ultimate sign of hope. We’ve seen Figment’s popularity explode recently with sold-out popcorn buckets and a permanent meet-and-greet, so it makes total sense that Disney would want to invest in his actual home base.
Planning Your Visit to the Imagination Pavilion
If you’re heading to EPCOT in 2026, you don’t have to wait for a rumor to come true to see your favorite dragon. Here are some tips for making the most of your visit to World Celebration:
- Meet Figment in Person: You can currently find Figment at his dedicated meet-and-greet location inside ImageWorks. It’s one of the most unique character encounters in the park, and he doesn’t currently use a Lightning Lane Multi Pass, so be sure to check the My Disney Experience app for daily appearance times.
- Check the Magic Eye Theater: This summer, from May through July, the Magic Eye Theater next door is hosting exclusive V.I.PASSHOLDER character meet-and-greets. While the lineup changes, it’s a great spot to cool off and see some of Mickey’s best pals in a semi-private setting.
- The Ride Experience: For now, the current version of Journey into Imagination with Figment is still operating. It’s a great choice for families with small children because it rarely has a long wait, making it a perfect “filler” attraction between your more intense Lightning Lane bookings.
What This Means for the Future
While we have to wait for official word from Disney Imagineering, the renewed focus on Figment is undeniable. Whether it’s a simple technical refresh or the long-awaited “Version 4” of the ride, it’s clear that Figment is safe in the park’s future plans. EPCOT has been undergoing a massive multi-year transformation, and updating the Imagination pavilion would be the perfect way to cap off the park’s new look.
Until we see the construction walls go up, we’ll keep our eyes on that purple dragon and hope for a little more spark in the next update!
