Daredevil: Born Again Finale: Is Marvel Building the Dark Avengers?

The Return of Luke Cage and the CIA Connection

The season two finale of Daredevil: Born Again didn’t just wrap up the intense rivalry between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. It also blew the doors wide open for the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). One of the biggest surprises was the official return of Mike Colter as Luke Cage. We found out that Luke had been working overseas for the mysterious Mr. Charles, played by Matthew Lillard. It turns out that Charles is an operative for none other than Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Val), the CIA Director who has been busy recruiting enhanced individuals across several Marvel projects.

Luke Cage eventually steps away from this shady government work to return home to his wife, Jessica Jones, and their daughter. However, his departure left a vacancy in Val’s lineup, and the person stepping into his shoes is none other than Benjamin Poindexter, also known as Bullseye. The finale shows Bullseye on a plane with Mr. Charles, ready to start his new life as a government-backed mercenary. This swap is more than just a plot point; it’s a massive nod to a specific team from Marvel Comics history.

What are the Dark Avengers?

In the comics, specifically during the “Dark Reign” storyline, Norman Osborn takes control of national security and forms his own team: the Dark Avengers. This wasn’t a group of heroes, but rather a team of villains masquerading as Avengers. Bullseye played a key role on that team, taking up the mantle of Hawkeye. He wore the suit, used the bow, and fooled the public into thinking he was a hero while committing brutal acts on Osborn’s behalf.

While Norman Osborn isn’t currently in the MCU’s Earth-616, Val has effectively stepped into that role. She has been collecting “assets” for quite some time, and the pieces are starting to fit together. We’ve already seen her involvement with the Sentry and the Thunderbolts. By adding a lethal marksman like Bullseye to her payroll, she’s moving closer to having a team that can mimic the actual Avengers while operating under her direct control.

Why This Matters for the MCU Future

The recruitment of Bullseye changes the stakes for the street-level heroes. For two seasons, Matt Murdock has fought to keep Hell’s Kitchen safe from local crime lords. Now, he’s facing a world where his greatest enemies have the full backing of the United States government. If Val is indeed building the Dark Avengers, she’s not just looking for muscle; she’s looking for replacements for the heroes the world lost after the events of Avengers: Endgame.

Fans have been asking if Bullseye will actually put on a Hawkeye costume. While the finale didn’t show him in a new suit, the implication is there. He’s a man who has already posed as a hero before (remember him dressed as Daredevil in the earlier Netflix seasons?), so impersonating an Avenger is right up his alley. Here are a few things to keep an eye on as we move toward season three and future films:

Marvel’s Daredevil: Born Again season two is currently streaming on Disney+. It’s clear that while one battle for New York has ended, a much larger, more dangerous game is just beginning.
