The Wildest Ride is Back
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad officially reopened at Magic Kingdom on May 3, 2026, after a refurbishment that lasted over sixteen months. This wasn’t just a simple paint job. Disney replaced the track, updated the trains, and added brand new show scenes that have completely refreshed the experience. If you haven’t ridden it yet, you’re in for a treat.
What’s New on the Mountain?
The most impressive addition is the Rainbow Caverns sequence. This scene pays homage to the classic Mine Train Through Nature’s Wonderland and features beautiful phosphorescent pools and glowing stalactites. The ride also features a reworked finale and a noticeably smoother track. Despite the smoother feel, the speed remains just as thrilling as ever. You’ll still get that classic hootin’ an’ hollerin’ energy, but without the bone-rattling vibrations of the past.
A Major Win for Families
One of the biggest surprises coming out of the reopening is the change to the height requirement. Following a safety review and the installation of the new trains, Disney has lowered the requirement from 40 inches to 38 inches. This might seem like a small change, but it opens the ride up to a lot of younger children who were previously just an inch or two too short. It’s now in the same category as Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, making Frontierland a much bigger draw for families with preschoolers.
The Lightning Lane Multi Pass Strategy
With its return, Big Thunder Mountain has been placed into Tier 1 for the Lightning Lane Multi Pass. This means you’ll have to choose between it and other heavy hitters like Space Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Peter Pan’s Flight, and The Jungle Cruise. Because it’s now more popular than ever, your strategy needs to adjust.
- For Disney Hotel Guests: Remember that Big Thunder Mountain is NOT part of Early Entry. Don’t head there first thing in the morning. Instead, use your Early Entry time for Fantasyland or Tomorrowland. Try to book your Tier 1 Lightning Lane for Big Thunder for slightly later in the day so you can enjoy other attractions while crowds are low.
- For Day Guests: If you’re not staying on property, try to snag an early Lightning Lane window. This allows you to redeem and then book another selection sooner, giving you more flexibility for the rest of your day.
- Rope Drop Strategy: If you didn’t get a Lightning Lane, make sure you’re ready at the Frontierland rope drop. Since it isn’t open for Early Entry, the standby line won’t start building until the park officially opens for everyone. This is the best time for non-resort guests to ride with a minimal wait.
The return of this classic coaster definitely complicates the Magic Kingdom puzzle, but the updates make it a must-do on your next visit. Whether you’re excited for the smoother track or the new 38-inch height limit, Big Thunder is officially back and better than ever.
