A New Chapter for Animation Courtyard
Disney’s Hollywood Studios is preparing for a significant transformation as it leans back into its roots as a working studio—this time with a magical twist. The area formerly known as Animation Courtyard is being reimagined into “The Walt Disney Studios” lot, an expansion inspired by the legendary Burbank studio campus. At the heart of this update is the return of a fan-favorite name with an entirely new concept: The Magic of Disney Animation.
Taking over the space previously occupied by Star Wars: Launch Bay, this brand-new experience is inspired by the Emmy Award-winning short film, Once Upon a Studio. The exterior of the building will even pay homage to the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building in California, complete with a massive Sorcerer Mickey Hat perched on the roof.
Step Inside “Once Upon a Studio”
The storyline for the attraction is as charming as the short film that inspired it. As you enter the building, you’ll find that the animators have temporarily stepped away from their desks, allowing the characters to come to life and take over the studio. This walkthrough experience is designed to be interactive, blending the history of the craft with modern technology.
One of the most anticipated sections is “Off the Page!”, a series of six immersive character greeting areas. Each space is themed after a specific department in the animation process:
- Story: Meet Mulan in front of oversized storyboard panels.
- Layout: Visit Rapunzel in a setting inspired by the classic multiplane camera.
- Hand-Drawn Animation: Spot Chip and Dale causing mischief among the drawing desks.
- Computer Animation: Find Donald and Daisy experimenting with digital tools.
- Lighting: Laugh along with Goofy as he handles the studio spotlights.
- Effects: Encounter Stitch in a high-energy environment dedicated to movie magic.
Interactive Fun for the Whole Family
For those looking to hone their own artistic skills, the Animation Academy is returning with a new host. “Olaf Draws!” features an advanced animatronic of the beloved snowman from Frozen who will guide guests through drawing lessons. While the lessons themselves utilize pre-recorded guidance from legendary Disney artists, having Olaf as your “teacher” adds a unique layer of entertainment to the class.
Younger guests will have their own dedicated space in the “Drawn to Wonderland” playground. This indoor play area is inspired by the original Alice in Wonderland concept art created by Disney Legend Mary Blair. It will feature an oversized flower garden with musical instruments, a Mad Tea Party playset, and a Tulgey Wood exploration area, offering a whimsical retreat from the Florida sun.
Planning Your 2026 Visit
The transformation of the courtyard will happen in phases. While the outdoor area of “The Walt Disney Studios” lot and the new Disney Jr. Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! show are scheduled to debut on May 26, 2026, the full “Magic of Disney Animation” indoor experience is slated to open in late summer 2026.
If you’re visiting during the transition, don’t worry—popular favorites like The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure and the Walt Disney Presents gallery will remain open to guests throughout the construction period. This new area promises to bring a much-needed balance of interactive play, character encounters, and studio history back to the park.
