Inside the Magic: Imagineering’s Pardon Our Pixie Dust Series
There’s nothing quite like a peek behind the construction walls to get the Disney community buzzing. In the latest installment of the YouTube series Pardon Our Pixie Dust, Walt Disney Imagineering is pulling back the curtain on three major projects currently transforming Walt Disney World. From the rockin’ arrival of the Muppets to the restoration of a Frontierland classic, there’s a lot to cover as we look toward a very busy summer in the parks.
The Muppets Take Over Sunset Boulevard
At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, the transformation of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is moving at high speed. The attraction, which is being reimagined to star The Muppets, is officially set to open its doors on May 26, 2026. Imagineering shared a first look at the props being installed in the queue and load areas, and fans of the franchise will find plenty of Easter eggs. Look out for a crate labeled “The Great Gonzo’s Weird Stuff,” Muppet Labs inventions, and even Fozzie Bear’s signature rubber chickens.
The exterior of the building is also getting a psychedelic makeover. The iconic upside-down limo has been updated with vibrant red and orange flames and airbrushed music notes, reflecting the groovy style of Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem. While the massive Stratocaster guitar is still behind scaffolding, it’s clear that the Muppets are ready to bring a brand-new energy to this high-speed limousine ride through Hollywood.
A New Sparkle for the Wildest Ride in the Wilderness
Over at Magic Kingdom, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been closed for a massive, multi-year refurbishment, but the wait is almost over. The attraction is scheduled to reopen on May 3, 2026. Imagineers have been working tirelessly to re-track the coaster and add what they call “new magic” throughout the experience.
One of the most exciting additions is the long-awaited Rainbow Caverns scene, featuring glowing phosphorescent pools and iridescent rock formations. Guests will also see gold on the mountain for the first time in the attraction’s Florida history. The update includes a more immersive bat cave with realistic new figures and restored effects that have been dormant for years. Perhaps most importantly for families, the height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain is being lowered from 40 inches to 38 inches when it returns.
Lakeshore Lodge: A Nature-Inspired Retreat
Looking further into the future, Imagineering shared updates on Disney’s Lakeshore Lodge. This new Disney Vacation Club resort is being built on the shores of Bay Lake, occupying the former site of the River Country water park. The resort is currently projected to open in Summer 2027.
The lodge is designed to celebrate the beauty of the natural world through the lens of Disney artists. Imagineering noted that over 800 tons of steel have already been used in construction, and work is now shifting toward interior finishes and paint. Once complete, the resort will feature 967 rooms, including unique waterfront Lake Houses and cabin-like rooms tucked into the trees. Its location in the Magic Kingdom resort area means many guests will enjoy clear views of the park’s nightly fireworks displays.
Planning Pro-Tips for Your 2026 Visit
- Mark the Calendar: If you’re visiting in early May, prioritize Magic Kingdom to catch the reopening of Big Thunder Mountain. If your trip is later in the month, Hollywood Studios will be the place to be for the Muppets’ debut.
- Check Height Requirements: The new 38-inch height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain means more little ones can join the “wildest ride in the wilderness” than ever before.
- Utilize Lightning Lane Multi Pass: Expect heavy crowds for the Muppet retheme. Booking your Lightning Lane Multi Pass selections early will be essential for managing your day at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Whether you’re excited about zany Muppet props or the return of classic Frontierland storytelling, these updates show that Walt Disney World is in a constant state of growth. It’s an exciting time to be a fan, and we can’t wait to see these projects cross the finish line.
