A Big Change for Port Discovery
It’s always a bittersweet moment when we hear about a classic attraction taking its final bow. Tokyo Disney Resort has officially announced that Aquatopia, the trackless water ride in Tokyo DisneySea’s Port Discovery, will be closing its gates for good on September 14, 2026. For those who’ve spent years watching these futuristic watercraft spin and twirl across the lagoon, this news hits hard, but it’s part of a much larger vision for the park’s future.
Aquatopia has been a staple of the park since Tokyo DisneySea first opened on September 4, 2001. It was one of the very first attractions to showcase Disney’s trackless ride technology, which paved the way for modern hits like Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure. Seeing it go feels like losing a piece of Imagineering history, but the Oriental Land Company (OLC) is looking toward a long-term strategic vision for 2035 that includes a major reimagining of the entire Port Discovery area.
The Final Summer Splash
If you’re planning a trip to Japan this year, you’ll still have one last chance to experience the chaos of Aquatopia before it disappears. The ride is currently finishing up a short temporary refurbishment and is set to reopen its regular version on April 23, 2026. This classic version will run through June 30, 2026.
However, the real highlight for the attraction’s swan song is the return of the “Get Soaked” version. From July 2 through its final day on September 14, Aquatopia will join the Summer Cool-off event. This version of the ride adds extra water sprays and fountains designed to make sure every guest leaves completely drenched. It’s a fan-favorite way to beat the humid Tokyo summer and a fittingly energetic way for the ride to go out.
Why Is Aquatopia Closing?
While Disney hasn’t announced a specific replacement attraction just yet, the closure isn’t a surprise to those following the park’s expansion plans. Concept art released by OLC previously hinted at a redesign for Port Discovery and even parts of the nearby American Waterfront. By removing Aquatopia, the park creates a significant amount of space for whatever the next generation of DisneySea storytelling will be. OLC has made it clear that they view the theme parks as a “growth business,” which often means making the difficult choice to retire older favorites to make room for large-scale developments.
Planning Pro-Tips for Your Final Ride
- Check the Reopening Date: If you’re visiting in the next few days, remember the ride doesn’t reopen from its current refurb until April 23.
- Prepare for the Soak: If you’re riding during the “Get Soaked” period (July 2 – Sept 14), bring a poncho or a change of clothes. They aren’t kidding about the name—you will get wet!
- Visit During the Jubilee: Tokyo DisneySea is also celebrating its 25th Sparkling Jubilee during this time, so expect higher crowds as locals flock to the park for both the anniversary and the final rides on Aquatopia.
- Capture the Memories: Since this is a trackless outdoor ride, it’s one of the most photogenic attractions in the park. Grab those photos of the vehicles spinning near the waterfalls before the area changes forever.
Change is the only constant in the Disney parks, and while we’ll miss the unpredictable movements of those little watercraft, we can’t wait to see what Imagineering has planned for the future of Port Discovery. For now, we’re just going to enjoy one last spin through the whirlpools.
