Warning: A New Major Roadwork Project Starts at Disney World This June

Summer Travel Alert: Road Construction Hits the Western Entrance

It is officially summer 2026 at Walt Disney World and that means two things: high heat and heavy traffic. If you are planning on driving your own vehicle or renting a car for your upcoming vacation, you need to prepare for some significant shifts in how you navigate the resort property. A major multi-phase construction project is ramping up on some of the busiest roads in Central Florida, and it could put a serious dent in your rope-drop plans if you are not careful.

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District (CFTOD) has officially issued a bid for an interim roadway improvement project targeting the heavily congested intersection of Western Way and Buena Vista Drive. This particular stretch of road is a lifeline for guests staying on the west side of property or those coming in from the Flamingo Crossings area. Construction is currently scheduled to begin on June 29, 2026, and is expected to last approximately 60 days.

What to Expect on the Roads

This project is not just a simple pothole fix. The scope of the work is quite extensive and will include several elements that typically lead to lane closures and shifted traffic patterns. According to project details, you can expect the following:

While the goal is to have the project substantially complete by late August 2026, the timing means this work will be happening during the peak of summer crowds and the start of the Halloween season.

The Strategic Importance of Western Way

Why should you care about this specific intersection? Over the last few years, Western Way has evolved from a secondary backroad into a primary artery for the resort. With the massive expansion of the Flamingo Crossings area and new housing for Cast Members, this corridor is now a main thoroughfare. It is the primary route for anyone heading toward Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort or the Disney’s Animal Kingdom area from the west.

This intersection already sees severe congestion during shift changes around 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Adding construction equipment and lane shifts into that mix is a recipe for gridlock. If you have a Lightning Lane Multi Pass reservation early in the morning, getting stuck here could mean missing your window.

Ongoing Delays on World Drive

As if the Western Way project were not enough, long-term construction continues on the north side of property. The World Drive North Phase III project, which involves the realignment of Seven Seas Drive and new roundabouts near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, has faced significant delays. Recent reports indicate this project may not reach full completion until late 2027.

Our Take: How to Navigate the Mess

At Mickey on Main Street, we believe that a little preparation goes a long way. This roadwork is a classic case of “growing pains.” As Disney prepares for even more expansion in the coming years, the infrastructure has to keep up. Here is our expert advice for staying ahead of the orange cones:

Stay patient and keep your eyes on the road. The magic is still waiting for you, even if it takes a few extra minutes to get there!
