Progress Report: Monstropolis Construction Hits a Major Milestone at Disney’s Hollywood Studios

The Scare Floor is Officially Under Construction

It is a busy time to be a Disney fan. While many of us are still processing the massive announcements from D23, the Imagineering teams are already hard at work on the ground at Walt Disney World. One of the most anticipated projects is the brand-new Monstropolis land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This new area is set to replace the former Muppets Courtyard, and we have some exciting updates regarding the progress of Disney’s first-ever suspended roller coaster.

Vertical Progress on the Door Coaster

The biggest news coming out of the construction site is that the project has officially gone vertical. The first set of coaster track supports is now standing tall, marking a major milestone for the attraction. For those who aren’t familiar with ride engineering, seeing these steel supports go up is the first real sign of the coaster’s layout taking shape before the massive gravity building is constructed around it.

Currently, workers are focused on the foundation of the attraction. A significant amount of concrete has already been cast for the coaster floor. If you were to look at the site right now, you’d see a complex web of rebar and electrical conduit being threaded through the footers. This intricate prep work is essential for the high-tech systems that will power the Door Vault adventure. More supports are currently staged just outside the park, waiting to be moved into place as the foundation settles.

The Transformation of Muppets Courtyard

To make room for the city of Monstropolis, the landscape of Disney’s Hollywood Studios is changing rapidly. The former Muppets Courtyard area, located between Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Toy Story Land, is being completely overhauled. Construction crews have already begun stripping the brickwork from the former Muppet*Vision 3D theater. Scaffolding now surrounds several buildings as they are prepared for a total thematic shift.

While the transition is bittersweet for fans of the Muppets, the scale of this project is impressive. Beyond the coaster, the land itself is seeing massive utility work. Crews are currently excavating the entrance to the land and installing underground piping to support the new infrastructure. There are also rumors circulating about a new venue called “The Glob” theatre, which would likely serve as a central piece of the Monstropolis city streets, though Disney hasn’t officially confirmed that specific name yet.

What This Means for Your Next Trip

If you’re planning a visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios in the coming months, you’ll definitely notice the construction walls. Because Monstropolis sits in a high-traffic area, here are a few things to keep in mind for your planning:

A New Era of Thrills

This suspended roller coaster is a massive swing for Imagineering. By putting guests inside the iconic Door Vault from the films, Disney is aiming for a level of immersion we haven’t seen in this part of the park before. While we don’t have an official opening date just yet, the speed at which they’ve broken ground and moved to vertical construction suggests this is a top priority for the resort. Stay tuned as we continue to track the transition from the Muppets to the monsters!
