6 Dates to AVOID Buying Disney World Lightning Lanes in May 2026

Why You Might Want to Skip the Purchase This Month

Heading to Walt Disney World in May 2026? You’re likely looking at the calendar and trying to figure out which days require that extra boost to skip the lines. While Lightning Lane Multi Pass is often a lifesaver, there are specific dates this month where it simply isn’t worth the cost. Between short park hours, ultra-low crowd predictions, and special evening events, buying a pass on these dates could be a waste of your vacation budget.

May 13: The Magic Kingdom “Short Day”

If you have Magic Kingdom on your itinerary for Wednesday, May 13, pay close attention to the park hours. The park is currently scheduled to close to regular guests at 5:30 PM. When a park closes this early for a private event, the window to “stack” your Lightning Lane selections is cut significantly short. You’ll be paying the same daily price as a guest who gets to stay until 10:00 PM or 11:00 PM, but you’ll have four to five fewer hours to use it. On top of that, crowds usually stay away from the park on early-closure days, meaning standby waits will likely be low enough that you won’t even need the pass.

May 10: The Mother’s Day Crowd Mystery

It sounds counterintuitive to skip Lightning Lane Multi Pass on a holiday like Mother’s Day, but historical data and current 2026 projections suggest this is one of the lightest crowd days of the entire month. Many families opt for long brunches at Disney Springs or hotel resorts rather than hitting the attractions. With crowd levels predicted to hover around 8% at the major parks, paying $29 or more per person to skip a 15-minute line for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad just doesn’t make sense. Save that money for a nice meal instead.

May 4, 11, 18, and 25: The After Hours Double-Dip

These four Mondays in May are significant because they are scheduled Disney After Hours dates for Magic Kingdom. If you are planning to attend the After Hours event at night, we strongly recommend that you do NOT buy a Lightning Lane pass for the daytime. The After Hours ticket already grants you access to the park with incredibly low wait times for the most popular rides. If you buy a Multi Pass during the day and then attend the party at night, you’re essentially paying twice for the same privilege. Since crowds on these Mondays are expected to be manageable (especially on May 4 and May 11), you can easily enjoy the park via standby during the day and save your energy and money for the walk-on waits at night.

The Shoulder Season Strategy

May 2026 is shaping up to be a unique “shoulder season” for the parks. With the massive opening of Soarin’ Across America and the Bluey Experience scheduled for May 26, many visitors are pushing their trips to the very end of the month or early June. This creates a “sweet spot” from May 4 through May 21 where crowds are some of the lightest we’ve seen all year. Before you tap that purchase button in the My Disney Experience app, take a quick look at the posted standby times. If Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is under 45 minutes, you’re better off keeping your cash in your pocket.
